Power Outage

What you should do once the power are back on?

Thank you for reading my article on Aquarium Maintenance Tips during a Power Outage.

This is the 2nd part as promised and you can get the custom checklist at the end of this article.

It is even crucial for you to know what to do after your fishes have survived a power outage crisis as the steps that you take after it will determine if your fishes and aquarium can survived for a long period of time or just for a couple of days after the power outage.

So here are the 3 tips after a power outage:

Tip #1: Clean your aquarium

It is very important to clean your aquarium properly once the power returns.

Check that all your aquarium equipment are working without any problem. Some of the equipment can be damaged by the power outage and should be fixed or replaced.

When the power comes back, water should be partially changed; this will help to remove toxins and recover the oxygen level in the water.

Tip #2: Check your fishes health

The health condition of each fish should be monitored during the following days to prevent diseases due to lack of adequate water filtration.

High levels of bacteria and parasite invasions can cause serious problems.

The necessary treatments should be done and water should be free of pathogenic microorganisms.

Tip #3: Check your water conditions

After the power returns, your aquarium environment should be controlled regularly.

Test kits can be purchased to examine several water parameters (such as temperature, ammonia, and pH). These recommendations should be applied regularly until your aquarium environment is safe for your fish.

Do more frequent testing than usual just to be safe

Recommended Test Kit: API Freshwater Master  Test

In Summary…

The safety of your fish is dependent upon you every day; however, when Mother Nature interrupts (causing power outage), your fish will truly count on you for their longevity.

Once your power returns and your aquarium is running back on schedule after you’ve done the 3 tips above, you can return to enjoying the wonderful life within your tank.

Hope you find my tips useful in time of emergency which I hope won’t happen.
